Narrative readout of how the review battle unfolded after the charts have established which club actually captured the value.
The Cleveland Guardians edged the Seattle Mariners 6-5 at T-Mobile Park in a contest where the use of automated balls and strikes (ABS) reviews proved integral but didn’t decisively tilt the outcome. Across six total challenges, only two calls were overturned—with the Mariners successfully reversing two of their three challenges and the Guardians failing to overturn any of theirs. This resulted in about a third of all review attempts altering the on-field calls, reflecting both the calibrated precision of ABS and moments of human-umpire discrepancy.
Seattle’s ability to capitalize on ABS challenges came early and late in tight game situations. Notably, in the bottom of the second inning, a ball call against Randy Arozarena was overturned, adjusting the count significantly from 3-3 to 4-2 even though no specific pitch event was logged for the review—demonstrating that ABS can influence at-bat dynamics through non-pitch event interventions. Similarly, a pivotal called strike against Cal Raleigh in the bottom of the sixth was overturned at a 3-0 count, changing the count to 2-1 and altering the batter's approach before the plate appearance concluded. These two successful overturns contributed critical momentum swings at junctures where the score was tightly contested.
